The photovoltaic self-consumption in Spain 2019

A study carried out at the University of Aalto (Finland), affirms that the energy produced by photovoltaic self-consumption, could reach more than 80% of the heating needs of said country.

After having treated in previous articles issues that affect us in our day to day, such as What is Radon Gas ?, How to fight Radon Gas? and / or What is Feng Shui? Today we are going to discuss another issue that is also the order of the day.

What is photovoltaic self-consumption?

By definition, self-consumption is the use of the products or services that an individual or community produces and consumes by itself. Thus, we understand by photovoltaic self-consumption the generation and consumption of energy by means of photovoltaic panels installed in our house or property.

Among all the benefits that we speak to you in our community, such as choosing well in the area where you live (Read here the article Why is Maresme the best place to live?), How to have a healthy home and How Geobiology affects us in our day, the benefits of photovoltaic self-consumption are totally different:

What benefits does the photovoltaic system have in our home?

Economic and energetic saving: It is super important to design a custom project of the installation so that it is adjusted to the maximum energy demand of the house, because it is vital that it consumes energy instantly.
Greater efficiency: Given the proximity of the energy intake with the devices that consume it, it allows the use of energy to be greater. This implies, therefore, that energy savings always exceed 10%.
Saving emissions Co2: Being natural use of the energy that nature already provides us (in this case the Sun), we avoid polluting with the generation of Gas Co2 (the same that we expel when breathing).
Energy dependence: This point is linked to the first, and is that by not depending on a submanager for the use of energy in the home, we avoid taking surprises in consumption. In turn, and this is the strong point of this section, it reduces the consumption of fossil fuels and the energy dependence of Spain towards the exterior.

How does a solar panel kit for self-consumption work?

First of all, we must emphasize that there are two types of installations of solar or photovoltaic panels:

- Photovoltaic installations connected to the electricity network.
- Photovoltaic installations connected to a battery use.
Although both will help us reduce economic consumption and are friendly to the environment, its operation and installation allows us to differentiate a substantial difference between them.

What is the solar photovoltaic self-consumption connected to the grid?

This type of photovoltaic self-consumption, consists of an installation of solar panels on the roof or outside of our home, which are directly connected to our internal consumption network already existing in that home. (Click here if you are thinking of buying a house or apartment in the Maresme, or if you are thinking of renting a flat or house in the Maresme).

This solar self-consumption kit does not require the use of batteries since in the case of low or no power, it ends up by using the internal network connection of the home. Thus, the energy captured by the solar panels is distributed directly from these to the devices that require power. There is the possibility of installing a battery to increase the amount of energy consumed in the home, but it is already a separate issue since it is optional.

Types of self-consumption

Modality Type 1:

It is an installation where the main and total use of the generated electric energy is destined to the household's own consumption (Without sale of surpluses). Therefore, it does not need to be registered in the Administrative Register of Electrical Energy Production Facilities.

Practical case:

Electric self-consumption of 45kWp in a sector with a tariff 3.1A and a contracted power of 70 KW (with and without sale of surplus).

Modality Type 2:

This system of photovoltaic installation of solar energy, is intended for the use of own consumption in our home, as well as the sale of surplus energy produced by thermal plates to third parties.

This Type 2 Modality requires registering with the Administrative Register of Electrical Energy Production Facilities (RIPRE).

Practical case:

Photovoltaic self-consumption of 200kWp in a sector with a tariff of 3.1A, and a power of 317kW in P1 and 329kW in P2 and P3, with sale of surplus.

How is the photovoltaic self-consumption installation connected to the grid connected?

Solar light is captured by the solar panels installed on our property, responsible for transforming this natural energy into electrical energy.

Then, this energy is sent to an inverter that allows you to convert this energy from continuous to alternate. This modification is key so that the energy is apt for the consumption of household appliances or company by electrical wiring and electrical equipment.

What is photovoltaic self-consumption connected to batteries?

The photovoltaic self-consumption solar kit with lithium batteries is the second installation modality for an electric saving in our home. This type of isolated photovoltaic self-consumption, allows to store the surplus of energy that has not been used during the day, to make use of it during the night.

These surpluses will allow us to feed our electrical equipment through the energy stored in the batteries.

This type of self-consumption isolated from the network, is common in rural areas and remote regions of the city, where the electricity grid does not arrive, is very difficult to transport or is very expensive.

How much does the photovoltaic self-consumption (installation) cost?

Whether you are looking for how to calculate (and not calcolo) how much could cost a system of self-consumption photovoltaic or self-consumption forums, then we leave a link to the 3 best companies of photovoltaic installations in Spain 2019.

Is the photovoltaic self-consumption in Spain legal?

It is already a reality: The Regulation (RD 900-2015) affirms that Photovoltaic Self-consumption in Spain is 100% LEGAL.

Thus, according to Royal Decree 900/2015, the characteristics and main technical, economic and administrative conditions that must be taken into account in case you want to follow the legislation of solar energy in Spain and thus, have an installation of Self-consumption Photovoltaic, will be the following (also suitable for those looking for information on "Self-consumption photovoltaic 2017"):

- All the installations (except for the isolated ones) must be registered in the Administrative Record of self-consumption, within a period of one month from the formation of the access contract.
- The use of accumulation systems is allowed.
In case you want to perform an installation of that character, you must request the connection to the provider of the distribution network.
- Essential requirement: Have 2 meters in the border line.
- There will be a distinction between two types of self-consumers: Self-Consumers type 1 and Self-Consumers type 2.

Self-Consumers type 1:

- The technical requirements of Royal Decree 1048/2014 must be met, as well as the connection and access procedure of Chapter II.
- The access contract must be signed with the marketer, where it will be specified and to verify the type of self-consumption chosen (self-consumption with supply), maintaining the option for 365 days.
- The access point to the RdD must be requested, even if it has not been discharged to the network.

Self-Consumers type 2:

- The maximum power will be agreed upon in the supply.
- Depending on the power (more or less than 100kW), the regulations must be complied with as stipulated in decrees RD 1699/2011 or RD 1955/2000.
- An access contract must be signed with the trader in which the energy and the contracted characteristics are determined.
